I Love Snacks!

Remember when "snacking" was considered a bad thing? Like, "No snacking between meals!" Or equating snack food to junk food. It may be true that most junk food could be called snack food, but for me, that comparison goes in one direction only.

Now and then, a snack food can be pure adventure, utterly synthetic, probably unhealthy or just weird. But mostly, snack food should be good food. Whether you eat vegan, prefer sushi, tend to grill or seek out sausage daily, your snacks should reflect your food taste.

If we hold our snacks to the same standards as the rest of our food, snacking is prime eating. Snacks keep our metabolisms churning and our blood sugar levels balanced, the ultimate mood stabilizer!

We can all use an extra serving of fresh fruit or vegetables here or there, so they make good, easy snack food. Don't underestimate how satisfying a peach in season can be.

If you cook, it's easy. You can make your own snacks. (Mmmm, sweet and hot red pepper hummus with rice crackers!) Or, at least, you're more likely to see what's good in the supermarket and read the labels.

You don't cook? OK, so it's a little more of a challenge for you. Start slow. If you're the kind of shopper who tries to get out of the store as fast as you can, make a conscious decision to slow down and give yourself extra time. Think about what you really like to eat. Come up with one good snack idea. Be patient. Keep trying.

I love snacks! I'm going to invite some friends for dinner (not cocktails, dinner). I'm going to serve all snack foods, both savory and sweet. Some I will make myself. Some will come from the amazing restaurants in my hometown, Jersey City NJ.

It's going to be delicious.
